My First Weekend at Winterlude by Aaron Schurman
CLICK ON THE PICTURES TO SEE THEM IN FULL!!!
My Mom, Dad and I had a GREAT weekend! I learnt so much!
First we went skating. I was SO excited when I first saw the canal with all the skaters on it. I stopped just at the edge and watched everyone go by. Just like Big Bird does on Christmas Eve on Sesame Street.
Before we could get on the ice, I had to help my Dad do his skates up.

He was a little scared because he hasn’t been on the ice since Mom & Dad were young. And now they’re not. He was afraid he’d forgotten how.

Then Dad helped me with my skates and I was off!!!

(But, I wouldn’t wear my helmet. So I only went around the kiddy rink that was empty. And Dad held my hood the whole time.)

Soon, I had it figured out and I was giving Dad pointers.

Then, I figured Dad was ready for it, so I let him go off on my own.

But I kept my eye on him.

Later that night, we went back to a different part of the canal and Mommy & Daddy skated while they pushed me really fast in the stroller.

Then we went back to the ice sculpting competition to see how those guys were doing. But Mom is going to post those in the other blog she said.
On Sunday, (that was yesterday.) we went to Jacques Cartier park in (as Dad says) the belly province. They have a lot of cool snow sculptures there. And mazes and slides and buildings all made out of snow! The older kids can even go tubing down a great big hill!
Dad pulled me around in my sled.

Then I told Dad to get in because I knew his back was sore. But, he told me just to pull it with Mom’s bag in it.

Then Mom and I went down the big snow slides. (They were actually the smaller ones. But, they were big to me.)

There were lots of slides.
Skinny ones & fat ones. All made out of snow and ice!

There were snow carvings

And Sculptures (this is right before the big bully kid knocked me down) (You should have heard Mom yell!)

At this point, I’d decided I was tired. And that snow tasted pretty good.

Would you like some?

Mom and Dad turned me down too. But, they had something better in store for me.
Real Quebec POUTINE!!!

It looks kinda gross. And, normally I’m a French fry purist. So I wasn’t sure.

But, I tried it.

And decided that there is very little way that potato, cheese and gravy can go wrong.

I am my mother’s son. AND I LOVED IT!!!

(Mom loved it too. She even said the burns on her hand from where the lady dropped the hot gravy on her were worth it.)
Then we went into the land of yesterday. And learnt all about the native peoples and the courier du bois.

And then Mom and I joined in the parade in the centre court.

All in all it was a good day and a good weekend!
My team even won the Superbowl!

Winterlude Day 1. Fri Feb 1st, 2008
CLICK ON THE PICTURES TO SEE THE FULL THING.
The A team went to Confederation Park today. We braved the ice, cold and blowing snow. We battled commuters wanting to chastise and give advice. And we survived torture from being encapsulated under the strollers storm cover. But we did it, in order to bring you all the beginning of the ice sculpting competition.

These are all over the city to advertise and celebrate.

The entrance to the "Casino Lac Leamy Crystal Lounge"

The fountain inside Confederation Park serves as a `Display Shelf` for some of the already created Ice Sculptures.

An Inukshuk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inukshuk)

One of the bigger sculptures in the park. For my American friends... That is an Igloo. Some of the Inuit peoples lived in them (See inuit person to right of igloo). This one is just an ice sculpture and I can assure you no one is living in it currently. To the extreme right of that, is a dogsled. Also used by inuit people once upon a time as a method of transportation. People do still use dog sleds as a method of travel. However, not in Ottawa. Or Toronto. Or Georgetown.

Look! If you come to Winterlude, you can pretend you`re an inuit person.

The Crystal Lounge. I can`t wait to go have a drink here!

Another big ice sculpture in the park.

Can I just say I`m so excited about that stuff!

The beginning of the ice sculpting competition.

After shopping for a bit. We went back to see what they were making.

A view from above.

Worlds Longest Skating rink. (See it tomorrow night. Right here!)
(That is, if we`re not snowed in. Of course)
